Reopening Licensed Child Care
Update: January 15, 2021
Ruddy Family Y Child Care - Temporary Closure
On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, we were notified that an individual associated with the Ruddy Family Y Child Care has tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, Ottawa Public Health has asked that we temporarily close the facility while they conduct an investigation, and deep cleaning and sanitizing are completed.
We expect to reopen January 28, 2021. All Ruddy Family Y child care families and staff have been notified by Ottawa Public Health and given instructions on isolating and testing, where necessary. If you would like more information, please first contact Ottawa Public Health. We can also be reached for additional support by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Update: January 13, 2021
The Province of Ontario has been in a temporary lockdown period since December, and as of January 14, 2021, a provincial emergency with stay-at-home orders is in place. We support the need to take this necessary step to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
As an essential service, all Child Care programs will be open and running as planned.
We have been so happy to welcome back our Y Licensed Child Care families to our Taggart Family Y, Ruddy Family Y and Avalon locations. Our first priority remains the safety of Y families and staff.
Working with our local health authorities, we have safety and health protocols in place and are offering the same quality care that you and your family have come to rely on. By keeping children separated in small groups, enhancing cleaning and sanitization protocols, and ensuring proper hygiene and physical distancing when required, we are able to provide a fun, educational, and safe experience for all.
Below are some answers to some frequently asked questions about returning to child care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are daily health screenings required of all children in care?
Yes. Daily health screenings are required for both children and educators before entering our child care centres. As parents/guardians drop off their children, a short screening questionnaire is given, and your child’s temperature is taken. Only once the screening and temperature are completed satisfactorily can children enter the child care space.
Will there be fewer children in each classroom?
Currently, the cohort (group) sizes have increased from 10 to 15 children, plus staff, per room. This change has been designed to limit the spread of the virus, should a positive case be reported.
How will my child's environment be altered as a result of guidelines?
We will continue to provide the welcoming and caring environment that you and your family have come to expect in a Y Child Care setting. Changes to the classrooms will include setting up equipment to support limited contact between children and physical distancing of two metres between groups (cohorts) of children. Activities will be spread out throughout the classrooms. Additional outdoor time will be encouraged. At mealtime, children will be spaced apart and be served plated meals rather than self-serve.
What will my child be doing all day?
Our YMCA Curriculum is play based. Initially, we will focus on getting to know your child, making them feel safe and comfortable. Planned activities will be based on the interest of the children and will take place indoors and outdoors. There will be no swimming lessons. The jungle gym and the Y gymnasium will not be available for programmed activities.
How will the Y maintain a healthy and clean environment?
Health and safety is always a priority at the Y, and we have enhanced our cleaning and sanitization practices. Cleaning takes place three times per day, and high touch surfaces and toys are sanitized several times per day. Toys that cannot be easily sanitized (e.g. plush toys) have been removed from the centre.
What kinds of qualifications do Child Care staff have?
Our Educators are experienced, caring and qualified to work with children. Many of our staff are Registered Early Childhood Educators including our Supply Educators. We also employ Ontario Certified Teachers, Child and Youth Workers and other related professionals. All our staff are trained, hold Standard First Aid and Infant/Child CPR certification and have regular police checks.
