Community Impact

Due to the COVID pandemic, for the first time in our Y’s history, we were forced to temporarily close the doors of many of our facilities.  Despite this, we continued serving our community through essential programs like Housing and Child Care, and even while physically closed, we quickly adjusted to offer Employment and Newcomer Services online. By the summer of 2020, we were also able to provide a Camp experience for children desperate for normalcy and socialization and offer limited access to Health and Fitness services.

  • Despite the closure of overnight camps across Ontario, 616 children were able to find a sense of joy, exploration, and a much-needed chance to socialize at our Y Day camps.
  • Our Y Employment Access Center helped encourage local business growth by providing access to over $500K in financial incentives, allowing employers to provide employee onboarding and/or training for job creation or promotion.
  • The Y helped our community stay healthy at home, with more than 5,500 visits from people in the National Capital Region accessing free virtual fitness and wellness classes through YMCA at Home and YThrive.
  • Community partners and supporters donated over 50,000 facemasks, and an assortment of face shields, gloves, and gowns to Y staff working in essential services like childcare, housing, and cleaning and maintenance.
  • The Y’s Licensed Child Care program provided 302 children with a safe place to learn, create, and grow, allowing their parents - many front line workers – to continue serving our community
  • Despite COVID closures and restrictions, the Y Employment Access Centre hosted 532 online workshops and information sessions to support the unemployed during this time of economic recession.
  • At a time when children were not able to get enough physical activity, the Y’s online Y fitness and exercise program was shared with all local school boards to support distance learning and keep kids active while at home.
  • The Y’s transitional housing programs provided safe, secure housing and a sense of community to 429 people – including 115 children - seeking refuge.

The Y has now reopened facilities and camps, services and programs are running with full accessibility, in person.

Currently, the organization has a budget of $19M, 300 employees, and 100 volunteers with a portfolio of facilities over 9 locations, fitness & aquatics, camps, employment services, shelters, and housing (16-floor building).

The YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region is governed by a Board of Directors. This group of dedicated and committed volunteers is comprised of professionals who lend their expertise in providing vision, strategic leadership, policy directives, and stewardship for the association.

 The Vice-President Finance provides corporate and operational leadership for the effective oversight and stewardship of financial resources of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region.

The Vice President of Finance (VP) is a member of the Senior Executive Team, reporting to the President and CEO. Leading a finance team of seven professionals, the Vice President operates in a team leadership role to enhance team performance and improve bottom line financial performance. The Vice President has a key role at the Corporate Association (Association) level to contribute to the overall success of the organization

The VP of Finance:

  • Provides leadership for the organization’s strategic and operational finances
  • Is an integral member of the Senior Leadership team
  • Supports and provides leadership to the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board and attends all Board meetings.
  • Provides analytical support to the management team in making commercial decisions.
  • Is responsible for insurance and risk management, as well as debt management.


  • Be a positive role model of the Association’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Provide leadership to the Association through managing complexity and planning/implementation of both strategic direction and tactical implementation.
  • The ability to recognize patterns of behaviour and interactions among systems and to be able to set a clear direction from complex and conflicting information and manage the risks associated.
  • Provide coaching and support to staff as well as providing leadership to change management related to the implementation of Association-wide initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the organization’s insurance programs & associated risk management initiatives; ensures policies are being followed.
  • Establish a cohesive, positive working environment for all staff to feel they are contributing to the goals of the Association.
  • Responsible for communicating and upholding association standards for clean, friendly, and well-maintained centres.
  • Be a role model for service behavior by coordinating staff and client/member feedback to achieve success.
  • Represent the Association on strategic community boards and committees, relating to senior leaders of other community organizations, governments, and businesses.
  • Represent the Association on strategic YMCA Committees at the regional, provincial, national, and international levels.
  • Develop policies and procedures for legislation including privacy, access to social media, and access to information.
  • Provide strategic direction to the Association’s procurement programs.
  • Develop the financial analysis to support the capital replacement and operational issues to maintain facilities.
  • Accountable for achieving operational budgets related to the various areas of responsibility.
  • Accountable for achieving contractual obligations, meeting strategic goals, and managing risk.
  • Responsible for strategic debt management.
  • Accountable for managing the capital and operating budgets related to the capital projects.
  • Recruit, hire, develop and lead all staff within the branches and departments for which they have responsibility; all human resources management decisions must follow the policies, procedures, and practices that are included in the Association’s Human Resources policies.
  • Support the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors. Support the work of the Finance & Audit Committee and oversees the annual Audit(s). Prepare financial analysis required for Board meetings.
  • Manage treasury function; maintain the required cash flow reporting, including weekly cash flow forecasts and variance reports.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of long-term financial planning.
  • Lead, develop, monitor, and works to improve results of annual operating and capital budget processes.
  • Assist management team to develop bottom-up budgets and manage departments’ performance.
  • Continually review and improve financial systems and controls.
  • Review and ensure accuracy of all financial statements and develops monthly reports and management metrics for the CEO, Board and Leadership Team.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to the CEO & Senior Leadership team.
  • Own relationships with financial institutions.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and interpretation of all policies and guidelines affecting the overall association and the operations for the finance area.
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion.
  • As per the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons Policy, the staff of the YMCA-YWCA will take allegations of abuse seriously.
  • All staff members are familiar with their duty to report and the procedure for reporting suspected abuse or neglect of a child.

Role Criteria

 The essential and desirable criteria for the role include:

  • Ability to work in a fast paced and ambiguous environment: The incumbent is able to multi-task and make decisions with limited information.
  • This position requires the highest level of innovation, creativity, and analysis related to the identification and resolution of problems as well as the development and implementation of solutions that lead to the achievement of the Association vision.
  • Ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills in support of interfacing and interacting broadly across the Y and externally with different levels and groups of people (e.g., other functional departments, all levels of management, staff, volunteers, and the Board). Superior negotiating and persuasive skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, motivate and develop a team. Using coaching and on-the-job training to strengthen and develop teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and inclusive leadership practices.
  • High emotional intelligence (i.e., self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills)
  • Proven business acumen & strategic project management skills.
  • As a condition of employment, in accordance with the COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement Policy for Staff and Volunteers, you are required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a valid exemption.

Required Experience

  • A designated accountant (CPA) with a minimum of 5 years of management experience at a management level (required).
  • Understanding of IT and MIS in current business environments
  • Loan and debt administration
  • Charitable sector experience is highly desirable. A solid understanding of the general business priorities and financial reporting requirements of not-for-profit organizations.
  • Fluency in French is desired but not required
  • The Vice President is required to use their own personal vehicle to travel between operations and to community meetings and will be required to be away for Canadian or international meetings from time-to-time.
  • This position requires regular mobility among other Y premises in other to conduct Y business. The Y will cover expenses related to parking and it will be declared annually as a taxable benefit.

Interview with the Selection Committee

If there is a desire on both our parts to proceed further, we will ask you and the other short-listed candidates to attend an interview with the Selection Committee. Our client plans to have at least one extensive interview with you on a scheduled day. A follow-up interview may be requested.

Steps Leading to an Offer

After you meet with the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region Search Committee, we will advise you of their decision as soon as possible. If you are selected as a finalist candidate you may be asked back for another interview with the Committee. At this stage, the client will ask us to conduct reference checks and, possibly, a psychometric test.  If you are the preferred candidate, and the client is satisfied with the information received, you will be made a verbal offer of employment, during which time the terms and conditions of the offer will be discussed with you.
