Type: Part-time Casual Various Shifts; $ 19.93 per hour

Nature and Scope

The Second Stage Youth Support Worker will work as part of the Housing Services Team that provides programs and services for individuals with affordable/social housing needs including short and long-term residents, supportive housing, Family Shelter, Second Stage Housing for youth, counseling, and referral.  Second Stage Youth’s part-time team with the Team Supervisor, provide flexible coverage including evenings and weekends to deliver a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment and facilitate a positive group living environment within the Youth Program

Direct Service

  • Provide general information to individuals and agencies regarding eligibility for housing in the Y’s Housing Services and specific information about the Second Stage Youth Housing Program.   
  • Schedules and conducts interviews with housing applicants and their supports to assess eligibility and compatibility for the Second Stage Program
  • Develops and maintains individual goal plans with assigned clients
  • Assist and support clients in achieving their goals
  • Provides case management, counseling support, crisis intervention, and referrals for clients
  • Provides life and social skills workshops
  • With the Second Stage, Youth Team works collaboratively to provide Community Development programming facilitating the nurturing of a supportive living program
  • Annually the staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting  Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion.
  • Work is frequently interrupt-driven and requires the ability to effectively multi-task

Administrative Duties

  • Provide excellent service to clients with a quality focus that meets or exceeds standards
  • Maintain standards for reporting and operating procedures
  • Report statistical data
  • Assist with the organization and coordination of special events
  • Assists in the delivery of a comprehensive Life Skills Program
  • Assist in the mentoring of part-time staff and supervision of students
  • Enter service information into a database
  • Ensure client confidentiality and that all files and records are secure
  • Ensures accurate documentation of events/incidents and records in files, logs, or on appropriate forms and communicates information to team members and supervisor as required
  • Contributes to maintaining the filing system for the Second Stage Youth Program
  • Builds and maintains strong partnerships with health (mental and physical) agencies to help residents maintain their housing and address health issues
  • Maintain the system(s) of collecting and recording detailed client statistics and prepares reports as required
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining a high level of occupancy in the program
  • Builds and maintains links to relevant agencies/services to promote referrals to the Second Stage Youth Program. Make presentations about the program to referring agencies and collateral services.
  • Assist in the delivery of effective services and attainment of operating, licensing, and contractual standards

Facility Care

  • Maintain workplace to ensure a safe and clean working environment
  • Works with the Maintenance and Housekeeping departments to coordinate the maintenance of rooms and facilities to ensure acceptable standards
  • Encourage clients to keep common areas clean and tidy, as well as maintain their room to an acceptable level of Health and Safety

Qualifications and Skills

  • Fluency in both Official Languages (French and English), oral and written preferred (one of the part-time positions or the team Supervisor must be bilingual)
  • Related post-secondary degree, college diploma, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience in social services preferably  with youth
  • Knowledge and sensitivity in dealing with individuals with homelessness, addictions, and mental health
  • Minimum one-year experience in the housing field preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources relevant to youth
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Training in Suicide Intervention and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Facilitation skills for workshops and information sessions preferred
  • Flexibility in hours of work to meet program needs
