Re: Update on YMCA-YWCA’s Camp Davern Property
We are writing you today to provide an update about Camp Davern. As you may recall, in early 2015 the Y announced that we would be temporarily closing Camp Davern, while we analyzed the future sustainability of this camp.
We have concluded that this camp is not a financially sustainable model as it currently exists. There are numerous factors that have influenced this decision, such as declining enrollment, a highly competitive marketplace and significant capital investment requirements for this property.
Camp Davern will not be reopening and the property has been listed for sale, with the proceeds to be reinvested back into the Association. As a charity, we must be responsible financial stewards and make strong business decisions that enable us to continually strengthen our impact in the community.
This decision was not made lightly as we acknowledge the unique and significant role Camp Davern has played in the lives of so many young girls and women. Camp Davern is a treasured and important part of our Y and we are so proud of our rich history of preparing young women to succeed, building our future female leaders and helping girls make a positive difference in their communities.
We absolutely believe there is a need to offer strong programming that empowers young women and we are committed to continuing this important work at the Y’s Camp Otonabee, an outdoor camp in Dunrobin, ON. At this site, we offer a girls-only specialty camp, “Outdoor Girls” where campers experience canoeing, rock climbing, swimming, arts and crafts in a supportive, girls-only environment.
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the many Camp Davern alumni, staff, partners and supporters who have played an important role in shaping this unique and special camp. We value your continued support and dedication to the Y in our community.
