Advanced Aquatic Certifications

The YMCA developed the first nationally-recognized aquatics programs in 1931 and has continued to train aquatic leaders ever since.

Our aquatic leadership and certification programs provide you with the necessary training to become a lifeguard and swim instructor at any YMCA-YWCA in Canada or in the City of Ottawa.

Bronze Star
recommended 11 years

Bronze Medallion / Emergency First Aid
must be 13 years OR Bronze Star

Bronze Cross
must be 14 years AND Bronze Medallion AND Emergency First Aid
Standard First Aid and CPR C

  Assistant Water Safety Instructor
must be 15 years AND Bronze Cross
  YMCA Swim Instructor*
must be 16 years AND Bronze Cross AND Standard First Aid and CPR C
       
  National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
must be 16 years AND Bronze Cross AND Standard First Aid and CPR C
  LSS Swim Instructor
must be 16 years AND Assistant Water Safety Instructor AND Bronze Cross or NLS
  LSS Lifesaving Instructor
must be 16 years AND Bronze Cross or NLS
 

*To work for the YMCA-YWCA as a swim instructor, employees must have LSS Swim Instructors, or YMCA Instructor, or LSS Lifesaving Instructor.  To work for the City of Ottawa, employees must have LSS Swim Instructors AND LSS Lifesaving Instructors.
