The Ottawa Y Olympians Swim Club (OYO) is a YMCA-YWCA affiliated swim team dedicated to providing fun, fitness and competitive opportunities for young athletes from 5 years of age and up.
We provide a ten-month training program in competitive swimming that prepares swimmers for competition at local, regional, provincial and national meet levels. The program is carried out in a positive atmosphere of self-discipline and sportsmanship.
Swimmers are offered a training program based on their current fitness and skill levels. As skills and fitness develop, swimmers are offered an increase in training hours and advancement to more intensive and goal-oriented training programs.
The Ottawa Y Olympians strives to promote excellence in swimmers through the combined experiences of training and competing in a team focused environment. Emphasis is placed on participation, commitment and the development of the swimmer as a whole person and not just as an athlete.
Anyone interested in trying out the Ottawa Y Olympians program may elect to follow a two week trial period at any time. The requirements being that the swimmer is at least 5 years of age and capable of a continuous 50 meter swim. Swimmers are grouped according to age group and ability.
Ottawa Y Olympians participate in a full complement of competitive swim meets. These meets emphasize both team participation and the achievement of individual qualifying times for regional, provincial or national level meets.
Meets in the fall and winter are usually held in short course pools (SC, 25 meter) and those in the spring in long course pools (LC, 50 meter).
Most meets are organized so those swimmers compete against other swimmers of same age group and gender. The age groups are 10 and under, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, and senior. The majority of meets that we attend are one-day meets.
