Domestic Violence Program

The Y's Domestic Violence Program is a free therapeutic and support program specifically designed to facilitate the coping and healing process of children (ages three to six) who have been exposed to domestic violence and abuse.

Using age-appropriate play and art therapy techniques in a child-friendly therapeutic environment, the program strives to increase a child’s self-esteem and confidence, enhance communication skills, problem solving skills, and conflict resolution skills, teach coping skills, and assist in breaking the cycle of domestic violence.  

The cornerstone of our program is a 12-week play and art therapy based counseling group where children come together in a safe, non-threatening environment to share similar feelings and experiences. A concurrent mother’s support group is also made available. This provides an opportunity for mothers to learn about the effects of domestic violence on themselves and their children, exchange parenting challenges and child-guidance strategies, and address emotional, behavioural, social, and/or legal issues that affect them as individuals, as mothers, and as part of a family. Groups are offered twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Child care for siblings not attending group, and assistance with transportation is provided. 

Short-term and long-term individual counselling services for preschool children is offered as needed. Children who have individualized needs, who are too young to participate in a group environment, or who require further services once group counseling is complete may be suitable for such services.
