What to bring to your appointment

Y Newcomer Information Centre  - Tax Clinics

This year, the Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) is hosting several tax clinics which will run during tax season (March and April) that aim to assist newcomers in preparing their income taxes for the 2016 tax year. 

The tax clinics are part of a program provided by Canada Revenue Agency who trains volunteers under the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The volunteers will work with newcomer clients (personal income taxes only) to prepare tax returns in accordance with the income guidelines listed below. The service is offered to clients by appointments only, and at no cost to the eligible client.

Who is eligible to access the Y NIC’s tax clinic?

Newcomers and/or immigrants living in Ontario who are: 

  • Single person earning income up to $30,000
  • Households earning income of up to $40,000 and add $2500 per child
  • One adult with one child earning income up to $35,000

Documents needed to prepare a tax return:

  • Statement of remuneration paid (T4 forms)
  • Statement of Investment Income (T5 forms)
  • Government Forms (RC62 or any tax related papers forms received from government)
  • Post-secondary education information slips (T2202A)
  • Union or professional dues (money paid to be a member of an organization)
  • Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution receipt
  • Receipts of donations paid to Canadian charities or Canadian political parties 
  • Rental slips
  • Other relevant Receipts (bus pass, receipts for children sports and activities, childcare costs)
  • Medical expenses (prescription medicine, dentist, glasses, private health insurance) 

Additional documents:

  • Tax credit registration form (click here to download)
  • Last year’s Notice of Assessment (if available)
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Void check
