Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Taggart Family Y renovating?
As the community continues to grow, so does the demand for Y programs and services. The revitalization of the Taggart Family Y will help us accommodate this increased need.
The revitalization is also part of an overall organizational redevelopment plan to invest more than $35 million to modernize, refurbish and expand our facilities.
How old is the building?
It was built in the 1970s.
What will happen to programs and services while construction is underway? Do you expect many interruptions?
We are committed to ensuring that our programs and services are offered with minimum disruptions during construction. Regularly updated information will be available online and at a communications centre in the lobby.
My children are enrolled in Y Child Care Services. What precautions are you taking to ensure their health and safety during construction?
The health and safety of Y children is our number one priority.
The construction schedule was developed carefully to ensure the least amount of disruption possible to the child care area and the amenities used by child care services.
Child care staff is working closely with the construction committee to get frequent updates and learn of any implications to our physical child care space and allow for time to inform parents and adjust our programming accordingly.
Will I find it difficult to find parking during construction?
We recognize that parking can be a challenge. In late May, we began moving some of our staff parking spots off-site to help ease the demand for client/member parking.
Where is the money coming from? Will my user fees increase?
The expansion is part of a $35-million redevelopment plan of which $15 million will be raised as part of the Y’s Capital Campaign Strengthening the Heart of our Community. Funds raised during the campaign come from individuals, businesses and foundations.
No, user fees will not increase as a result of this project. As with everything else, Y fees may increase over time due to inflation, etc.
Are there any other projects that will benefit from the Y’s Capital Campaign?
Yes. The Capital Campaign is currently supporting the revitalization of the Ruddy Family Centre Y (formerly the Orleans Y) and the Bonnenfant Y Outdoor Centre.
How can I help? Where can I give?
We're almost there! As of late January 2011, we have reached 75% of our $15 million goal. We are now seeking contributions from the community. Click here to learn more about how you can help.
